Jupiter is a 'gas giant', with no solid surface, unlike the Earth and the other terrestrial planets. Its atmosphere is crossed by dark and light cloud bands. Jupiter spins once on its axis in only 10 hours. As it turns, different features in the clouds come into view, including the famous Great Red Spot, which is 15,000 miles (24,00 kilometers) across.
